Joey and Emma - developmental updates

Emma's speech is exploding right now! Its amazing to me since this is my first time experiencing one of my children communicating so well at such a young age. Joey and Emma's verbal skills are about where Joey's are, but I can tell Joey understands more and is slightly more advanced then she is in his overall communication.

some recent achievements would be they are both saying please and thank you now (you do have to prompt them to say please, and sometimes they say thank you on their own and sometimes they dont say it all)

Emma says baba, milk, please, asleep when she wants to go to bed. she brings you here baba says baba, then she says millllllllllllll, and I tell her to say please and she says peeeeee, then when I ask her what she wants she says aseeee and signs asleep. She also says/signs: I want, play, drink, all done, more, eat, no (shakes finger) to name a few. I've met people who worry that baby sign language will slow down them starting to talk but with both my kids I have found the opposite to be true. A lot of times Joey doesn't learn a word until he learns the sign for it. then he learns the word and sign at the same time. Emma learns words when she learns the sign too. She has such a huge vocabulary and sometimes speaks in sentences with 4+ words. She also recently started saying mommy and daddy instead of mama and dada and I LOVE it! Joey calls me Ma and calls Emma "MaMa" and his dad is "da". His communication has increased a lot but he still used one sound to mean 3 or 4 different words so its VERY hard to understand him unless you already know what he is trying to say. Emma also knows how to say and point to her eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and feet. when you say armpits she lifts her arms so you can tickle her. she is working on learning to say head. she points to it a lot when doing the other body parts so you can tell her what it is. Joey has found a way to ask for help now too. He comes up and tries to say hand and takes your hand and starts pulling you in the direction he wants you to go with him.

Emma also tells me about her diaper. Pee, poo, caca, and ewwww. (she has 3 different words for poop lol) and when you ask if she needs a diaper change she goes over to the changing table and tries to climb on it and then starts telling you about whats in her diaper once you pick her up and put her on the changing table.

both of them are starting to repeat a lot more words, but Emma is a parrot! bluecheer.gif she also calls joey "joe" and when she doesnt liek what joey is doing she says nooooo, joe! and shakes her finger at him! she has a vocabulary of at least 50 words now :) she is also getting good at drinking from a regular cup. she does animal sounds too - meow for kitty, wow wow for dog, mooo for cow, baaa for sheep.

joey's new words are plane, train, bicycle (EVERYTHING with wheels used to be a car!), house, and hand.

and they are playing together really well now! we still have fights that mostly involve emma hitting joey or pulling his hair (ripped out a chunk of hair the other day) but most of the time they entertain each other and play TOGETHER and laugh together :)

Joey has his school evaluation at the end of this month to determine his placement in the 3-5 program. I really hope this program helps his speech and sensory processing disorder.

It sounds like they are both doing so well! I am totally on board with the Baby sign. I used it with both of my kids and I too think that it helped them too communicate quicker.
I am cracking up at Emma saying caca for poo.
