This is a perfect example of why spanking should be illegal. I understand most parents dont spank that way but there is too much room for interpretation in the legal system. Keep it simple - no hitting children. You can't hit your neighbor, your spouse, your parents, you bank teller, etc... the same should apply to children. I DO NOT think it is infringing on the rights of parents - you can STILL discipline your child - you just can't hit them. - why is hitting a child so important to some people

for the sake of those that ARE being abused and "flying under the radar" can't people just accept the idea of banning spanking - there ARE other things - things that aren't dangerous AT ALL and DO work. many options in fact! I just don't understand why anyone can justify spanking - even just a tap on the hand or a swat on the bottom - there are other ways! spanking doesn't even work in the long term. and even in moderation can hurt a child physically or emotionally. and many children are DYING from being abused because the law can't figure out the difference between a spanking and child abuse and where to draw the line. ITS JUST NOT NECESSARY. thats all it boils down to!! Why hit your child when you can get the same and BETTER results without hitting them? It is purely for parental satisfaction. Children are people too.
People say that is taking away the parents right. How so? Was it taking away the white mans rights to create equality with black people? was it taking away a mans right by outlawing them from hitting their wives? It's not taking away rights from the parents by banning spanking - its enforcing the rights of children as HUMAN CITIZENS. Children - the most vulnerable, the most valuable, the least protected, the least respected.

Hi Shana!
Food for thought I read about in an article a while ago: Spanking gives short-term results, presumably 'desirable' ones (i.e. child stops the behavior), but increases the problem long-term, leading to more, and more severe, spanking. It really is a cycle like that.
As for making it illegal, who could possibly police such a thing? If a child shows up bruised, then a law likely wouldn't have stopped parents from hitting that child in the first place, just like people still speed. I do agree though that such cases should be taken more seriously by authorities.
Anyways, love the new design of the blog, miss emailing with you but things have been so so busy! Your kids are so so cute!!

Hey angie - its great to hear from you!
As for making spanking illegal, yes there are still people who would break a law. People caught breaking the law would be fined or in more severe cases spend up to a year in jail. It will be up to the parent to decide if it is worth that risk to hit their child. For people who break the law, that is their choice - but it would decrease the number of people who spank. I remember reading something that said 80% of the people who do spank wish there was another way and don't like spanking. What more incentive to find another way? In other countries that have outlawed spanking, parents have to take classes to help them find these other ways when they hit their children. I love that solution as well.
Just because some people will break a law is no reason it should not be put into action. Some people still murder (usually people who were spanked when they were growing up) even though that is illegal. Some people still beat their wives - should they have not made that illegal? Why should children not have laws in place to protect them. Everyone else is protected. children are our responsibility until they are 18 - but that does not mean they are our property. They are still people. The law does not know where to draw the line, but regardless of if they do or where they do it, there will still be people who break it. It's a shame, but there are some delusional and/or abusive people out there who think s highly of hitting children.
I trust a big reason why it hasn't been made illegal is people hiding behind the religious aspect of it - though we know the bible does NOT in fact command us to spank.
The whole situation is a shame - I don't think spankers should continue to be allowed to continue on with this outrageous and inhumane behavior any longer. I can't believe in our civilized society we not only have people who still choose to spank, but that they are actually ALLOWED to! Unbelievable. What a truly sad world to live in when people are allowed to hit children.
Children are the ONLY people not protected. As I said before, Children - the most vulnerable, the most valuable, the least protected, the least respected.
We have to start somewhere. Some people may still break the law, but that doesn't mean the laws should not be put into place.
